To do or not to do? That’s the question…A quote, which intrigues every thinker in the world, and instigates every leader to act. A quote made immortal by Shakespeare, that still shakes many an individual!

The current immigrant crisis facing Europe fits exactly in to this frame of reference where the Europeans, struggling to accept the fact that most of the so called “guests” they have invited to their homes do not and don’t want to appreciate their values which includes hospitality, charity, treating each other with mutual respect etc!!!
A path that makes absolutely no sense to a set of people where discrimination, oppression and abuse is pretty much the way of accepted lifestyle! Where rationality is relative, results justify the means, with societal norms for mutual respect and individuality non-existent and most important law and order is negotiable!!! A society where the only predictable thing is chaos!
This value system is so starkly opposite to the value system of the Western world, where societal norms are respected, mutual respect is the prime driving force and individuality and equality a very highly guarded principles. Where Law and Order is non-negotiable and Where life pretty much is predictable!!!

Now when people from these two cultures collide, the only result that can be predicted out of this collision is anarchy, disturbance and absolute breakdown of any societal norms that may be in place.

This is so because of the motivational complications -as basic as language, food habits, dressing, and personal beliefs – that drives their actions and behaviors that keeps them in check in social interactions are so different, and very difficult to bridge in short spans of time.

For the newcomers, whose life situation reflects the basic stage depicted on Maslow’s drama triangle (Pun intended – it’s hierarchy of needs), satisfying their basic needs will be of utmost importance, than reaching to the higher needs as depicted. And, forget Self-actualization, which for majority of them will be a distant cry (I am being tolerant here).

When one’s life motivation is stuck on survival and uncertainty, where the basic needs of Food, Clothes, Shelter and Sex constitute the main cravings, the naivity of the governments of Europe not to have recognized this and expecting the newcomers to conform to their societal standards was, to put in simple terms, Foolish!

Now that they have opened the pandora’s box, the way to keep these immigrants in check and make the lives of their Citizens and those other people who have invested their time in integrating in to their existing societal norms already – is of utmost importance.

Whether the governments will do what it takes to save its existing eco-system and take measure to control the newcomers or will it be naive in hoping integration of two diametrically opposite cultures will happen automatically without any casualties or strong performance control measure is left to be seen.

What is needed to manage the current situation is to treat each and every individual as a different personality and not generalize the whole and have set standards that worked for their culture!

Hoping Europe will be Europe of the yesteryears!

Romania- Rusted and Rutted – Life Beyond the Iron Curtain

There are many reasons that make Europeans look at Romania and Romanians with awe!

It was a Romanian who was instrumental in bringing to this world the instrument to write in the modern times – The fountain pen as early as the 1827! This contribution to writing has continued even today, but the medium of writing has changed from ink to computer texts, with many Romanians contributing to modern writing through their intellectual capabilities in Microsoft and other software giants of the world!

The list of Romanians inventions that changed the way to make this world a better place is extensive, noteworthy with inventions like the Jet engine, Insulin, The Perfect 10, and so on.

Apart from this the ability to work diligently, with absolute focus and hard provided the opportunity is right at reasonable cost is another phenomenal aspect of many a Romanian, who is working outside Romania and side Romania.

What is intriguing here is that all these contributions to making this world a better place (except in software technology) by Romanians has unfortunately ceased to exist anymore. Beyond intrigue the aspect that distresses many a social psychologists and performance analysts is the reason for the lack of aspiration or zeal in majority of working class Romanians!!!

What contributed to this demise of aspiration and creativity? What happened to the creative people? What should be done to bring about a Romanian renaissance? Questions those are worth pondering and that crucial for a new Romania.

What’s ailing Romania and Romanians?

The answer to the above questions lie in the Psycho-Socio-Economic factors that surround the making of modern Romania and the diversity of people who are the policy makers, administrators, law makers, and the multitudes of those who constitute the workforce in the current days.

During the post World War II regimes till 1989, life of all Romanians, including many baby boomers, revolved around the following four unwritten doctrines for their survival, if they had to exist –

  • Follow the rules
  • Do nothing that is not asked of you
  • Going beyond the call of duty is totally unacceptable
  • All that belongs to you doesn’t belong to you!

The Players and the Participants

This systemic enforcement and encroachment on people’s psyche resulted in a new breed of survivors – comprising a majority not of the fittest, but of those, majority of whom were disinterested, blinkered and in few cases opportunists to the hilt.

In management terms these three types of people can be described as those who are followers, focused and the leaders.

This way of life resulted in many psychological and social implications including lack of trust, self-preservation, making a quick buck, beating the system, lack of loyalty etc. in many people. But the worst development or outcome, to have developed from this period seems to be the concepts of “ opportunism” and “Apathy”

The point of all these observations is that the majority of people in Romania are filled with those who come under the three categories above. Post 1989, with the revolution done and away, a new system of governance came in to place.

Majority of policy makers were apathetic people, who were and are followers and focused. While the executors of these policies, the leaders, comprising the third category – Opportunists!

Apart from these three types of people, there exists one more group, like in all societies.  These are the rebels of the society– Rebels who became entrepreneurs, thriving and living life through intriguing means that border on thrills and spills – thrills of achieving and doing new things in an enterprising manner. Spills, in cases where the path to success was filled with gray areas.

Like all countries, the Leaders and the Entrepreneurs represent the face of Romania. Sadly, there is no emotional connect or any bridges that fill the emotional gap between the leaders and entrepreneurs and the common people, who still live their lives following the rules or in a rut filled with bureaucratic procedures, lacking inspiration or aspiration.  The void this diversity has created is too huge that it is very difficult to address and hence is not being addressed at all – either through education or through enablement.

To worsen matters, these baby boomers have brought up their millennial kids in an environment filled with an eternal paradox. A paradox that makes these millenials to aspire for an open world, through processes that denies them any latitude through its multitude policies, rules and stipulations! Thus creating a group of demotivated, disinterested, visionless generation, who are readily misled and taken advantage off.

The Reality and the Path ahead

Reality that is facing Romania is the extensive brain drain that is happening due to lack of opportunities here.

With Romanian private sector filled with foreign players, who believe in optimizing their investments, empowerment and enablement of a Romanian professional, through knowledge enhancement and exposure is limited. With the current education opportunities not addressing the global demands in a corporate world, employees who work in these corporates are sadly denied of affordable self-development programs and are hugely dependent on the official ones. For many a Romanian, this option is not even available, as their organization doesn’t have the budgets for any of these things.

While in the state run organizations, development courses are by far unheard of, as these programs are not the driving factor for progression and rewards. And even if they are delivered these programs are done as processes to be completed than to enable performance.

Thus, with no development options available and people stills tuck in a time warp, Romania and Romanian professionals seem to in for a long disintegration. Since this is the picture the investors see on a regular basis, even they are forced to exit this market to other greener pastures.

Can this situation be reversed? Can something be done to make this better? Can the Romanian professional look ahead and get the knowledge to become global players? How soon can this be done? What can be done to get the life on to smoother roads from the current rut?

Solutions to all these will be shared in the forthcoming articles in Misca musings.

 See you soon.

D.R.E.A.M.S -From Humanoids to Humans!

Misca Musings…1/13

ImageThis world is filled with people who are purpose driven and focused. People, who are in constant pursuit of their happiness!  People with clear goals and objectives in life. Objectives that can be categorized into short-term, mid-term, and long-term timelines and milestones.

If you are one of this type stop and ask yourself this question – Do you have a feeling of emptiness, after achieving your goals that you set to achieve and strived so hard for? If yes have you wondered why?

Don’t worry if you don’t know the answer or don’t have the answer to the query above. Because you can rejoice in the fact that you are not alone in the world out there! You’re probably one of those millions of sincere, hardworking, creative, focused and purpose driven human beings who followed the steps or processes what many a management guru have prescribed, in various forms, to achieve your goals!

They would have asked you to be SMART and LOCKE’d you in a rut! Or suggested that you GROW up, but paralyzing you with constant analyzing in the process!

And if you were not enthralled by the material world of goals then by asking you to BE, DO and HAVE, the promise of attaining spiritual elevation would have been guaranteed to you!

At the end of all these, many of us still find it difficult to answer with a straight and definitive Yes or NO to this simple question – “ Do you feel 100% happy now?”

Why is this like this? What is the reason for this emptiness? Why are we still not satisfied after reaching our SMART goals? Why, why, why…

The making of a Humanoid

The answer to the “Why’s” above, lies in the “What” of your goals?

When we look at the essence of all our goals, we will see it is steeped in “What” is it that we want at the end of it all!

The problem with the “WHAT” world is that it is limited and trivializes your life to a series of transactions- otherwise called Short-term, Mid-term and Long-term goals!

In management terminology these processes makes one proclaim that they are goal oriented, focused, purpose driven, responsible, following a set path, possessing the zeal, process driven etc. Otherwise known as a Person with a vision and mission! Thus creating a breed of humans following a specific set of instructions to carry out some specific transactions. Or simply put pre-programmed!

In actuality having a transaction driven life is like living life one dimensionally! At any given time you execute your transactions through specific give and take methods, which have the permutations and combination of win-win, win-lose, lose-win or lose-lose options in the future.

Options which “Unintentionally ” drives us to be devious, manipulative, egoistic, opportunistic, compromising, and most of all self-centered! In my terms dehumanizing everything and making us all machines that is devoid of any emotions. Thus successfully creating humanoids out of humans. A sure shot recipe for ending alone, even after achieving your set goals. What these goal-setting processes succeed to achieve is making effective humanoids out of human beings. Human beings that have the capability to think, feel and reciprocate feelings to machines, that are pre-programmed, which follow a path by ignoring other’s needs while acknowledging their presence, and fixated on executing transactions, with “succeeding” as it’s main theme.

Since all these transactions are future oriented, and have our “survival” as its nucleus, we find ourselves alienated. Standing alone, inspite of being surrounded by other human beings. An island amidst an ocean! A Humanoid, that has the features of a human being, but stands out from the human race, as it cannot feel or understand what it means to be a human!

Becoming Human

“If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.”
― Henry David ThoreauWalden

Powerful words these. In the current world there are no wars or no conflicts. There is only scope for peace. If this is the truth, then why should we have these within ourselves and feel estranged with processes that blind fold us?

To explain Thoreau’s thoughts above we have the methods to achieve our goals. But why should these methods limit us to just one transaction at a time. Why should these processes make us humanoids? What is it that we can do to become humans again?

The answer is simple and lies in developing and increasing our emotional intelligence in addition with our IQ. All the goal-setting processes have made us calculative and logical. They have made us to be future focused and have conditioned us to prepare for tomorrow by remembering the past.

The Past is a fact. Nothing can change it. The Future is just perceptions and we don’t control it. Goal setting processes dished out by all schools tell us to think about the past, analyze it and to prepare to live in a world in the future that is beyond our control. What they fail to say is when we are busy doing these things we lose focus on what is “TODAY”, which is the reality.

“I’m going to enjoy every second, and I’m going to know I’m enjoying it while I’m enjoying it. Most people don’t live; they just race. They are trying to reach some goal far away on the horizon, and in the heat of the going they get so breathless and panting that they lose sight of the beautiful, tranquil country they are passing through; and then the first thing they know, they are old and worn out, and it doesn’t make any difference whether they’ve reached the goal or not.”
 Jean Webster

Goal setting processes have limited our thinking to just “What we want to achieve?” effectively ignoring the impact our actions create and the reactions we receive for our actions. This shortcoming can be overcome and can help us find our original religion – Human Beings – by asking ourselves the following 5 questions and answering it truly on a daily basis:-

  1. Who are we?
  2. What do we do?
  3. For whom do we do it?
  4. Why is doing this important?
  5. How is this going to make me and other happier today?

Once we have the answers to these questions, the all it needs for us to do is to follow our D.R.E.A.M.S (Daily Routines Effectively Achieved and Managed for Success) in combination with our goal setting steps to become humans once again.
